Beach House, Hamburg

2015

in collaboration with Jakob Grelck, Jenny Kurth and Justus Menten

The building is located exactly between the river Elbe and the historic waterworks complex. Built in the 20s, the house has the characteristic brick facade, often used in Hamburg, and a simple square floor plan. Over the years, the house changed its use and inhabitants several times.
The aim of the project was to mark the original “gate-house” function by creating a generous living space, crossing the whole building from North to South. The living room will become a filter space between the street and the back garden till the beach on the river Elbe. The building turns, in this way, into the gate between city and nature.
The other half of the floor plan will be dedicated to the functional spaces (laundry, bathrooms, stairs and a small office room). The sleeping area is then located under the roof.
